OVERVIEW

Welcome to Code of Respect, or X-CoRe for short. X-CoRe is an evidence-informed multi-component program to prevent sexual harassment and sexual assault among active-duty Airmen. It was developed by researchers at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston) School of Public Health. The program consists of 10 brief digital modules optimized for use on a mobile phone and a social marketing campaign to target cultural norms.

Components

X-CoRe comprises three main components:

  • Junior Enlisted Track: designed for Airmen ranked E1-E4;

  • Leadership Track: designed for mid-level and Senior leaders (ranked E5 and above);

  • Social Marketing Campaign: to target cultural norms.

The program sequence is based on the module topic, gradually progressing from identifying respectful and disrespectful behaviors to more serious forms of sexual harassment and sexual assault.

WHY DID WE DEVELOP X-CORE?

Icon of a graph Nearly 29,000 Service members experienced some form of unwanted sexual contact in 2023.
Icon of a military officer There are very few military-specific programs. Evidence-based sexual health programs developed for civilians have been effective in preventing dating violence and sexual violence by using a healthy relationships approach.
Icon of a handshake Our goal is to shift the culture around sexual violence in the military. We believe it ‘Starts at the Core’ by equipping active-duty Service members and their leaders with the skills to maintain respectful work, social, and intimate relationships.
